Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in Canada v Bedford (December 20, 2013)

In what could be considered one of the most progressive decisions for women’s rights coming out of Canada’s Supreme Court today, its laws on prostitution have been deemed unconstitutional, for violating a prostitute’s right to security of person.  So it is now legal for prostitutes to solicit, live off the avails and to keep a bawdy house (making these acts illegal meant punishing the prostitutes (mostly women) more than those who were exploiting them).  A finding of invalidity of the impugned provisions has been suspended for 12 months so Parliament has time to draft amendments to the Criminal Code which will punish the real perpetrators and traffickers.  On all counts very impressive!
