Bring Back the Youth Employment Toronto (YET) program

Soon after I sent the letter to the Right Honourable Stephen Harper about the drug problem plaguing our young people in Brantford and the hundreds of cities across Canada, we got this news release of a cut to a Federal Program which was managed by the City of Toronto and local governments across the country.
Last year, when we still had the benefit of the program, we were able to avail of the services of a young woman for 26 weeks, paid for by this program, and have since hired her full-time.  Especially in this era of high youth unemployment, we truly regret seeing these programs, that give youth a leg up by incenting employers to hire them, vanish forever.
Dear Partners:
Regrettably, after 30 years of successful operations, Employment and Social Development Canada has not renewed the City of Toronto’s Youth Employment Toronto program.  Effective immediately, the program will begin to wind down.

We appreciate the impact this decision may have on your youth clients since YET, with your partnership, has helped to support youth most distant from the labour market. We ask that you please do not refer new applicants into this program.  Our staff will be working together to develop the plan to wind down the program.  YET staff will be contacting their current clients to assist them in connecting with alternate service providers so they can continue with their employment service plans.  We will communicate with you again in the near future with more details.

We value our partnership with your organization and thank you for the support you have demonstrated over the years for the YET program and staff.
