Employment practices

Today I did something that could have been stressful but was super fun.  I participated on an Advanced Employment Law Roundtable at the Law Society of Upper Canada with 8 lawyers handling three fact scenarios.  Our discussions which were taped to be offered as webinars for young lawyers, centred a lot on some emerging issues – employer’s risks and legal obligations where misconduct occurs on social media (where is that line between work and life); mental health resulting from work-related stress and aging employees where retirement is more and more elusive due to people’s financial circumstances and there is no mandatory retirement age.  Our conclusion – there are no black and white answers, that employers had best be engaged with employees, have proper policies and training in place and have early conversations on employee career plans to ensure sustainable succession.  If you are dealing with any of these issues at work – ping me for a chat..
